ruca

roo-kahnoun
Spanish & ChicanoStrongDifficulty 3 of 3: Deep local

Definition

A woman, a girlfriend, sometimes an old lady. In older Chicano and caló speech it can mean your girl; from the outside it can sound rough.

In simple English: A woman, or someone’s girlfriend.

Examples

  • He showed up with his ruca and two kids.

  • Don’t talk about his ruca like that.

Usage notes

In-group California Mexican and Chicano speech. Understand it first. Repeating it if it is not your language can sound like you are playing dress-up — or picking a fight. Using it of a woman you do not know is disrespectful.
